Each month we offer a prompt to subscribers of Prime Number Magazine to write a 53-word story—no more, no less—and send it to us by the fifteenth day of the month. Our editors select one winning story, and the author receives a book from Press 53 as well as publication in Prime Number Magazine. Want to play along? Jordan Hua is a thirteen-year-old from British Columbia. She likes the idea of becoming a future writer, but honestly has no idea what she wants to do when she gets older. Apart from doing too much schoolwork, she usually spends her time reading. Other passions include pottery, piano, and clearly, eating sourdough bread.

Zeus granted my husband’s wish, in return for our hospitality to an unknown traveler. We are oak and linden now, deep rooted, our branches intertwined. Yet my husband made that impulsive, sentimental request for death not to separate us. Me, I would have asked for the well not to run dry in summer.

Madeleine McDonald finds inspiration walking on the chilly, windswept beach of her Yorkshire home. As a former precis-writer, she enjoys the challenge of writing flash fiction. Her short stories have been broadcast on BBC radio, and published in various anthologies and journals. Her latest novel, A Shackled Inheritance, is available from Amazon Kindle.

Time traveling has its perks and challenges. I was stuck in 1692 once. When the Reverend Parris fell, I performed basic first aid and saved his leg. I should’ve kept my mouth shut instead of intoning faux Latin for a sense of gravitas. Luckily, I was picked up before the bonfire was ready.

Sheri Holden-Peck has been a law enforcement dispatcher, radio disc jockey, and voice-over artist. An avid lover of SciFi and Fantasy, she now writes her own, joining the stories she’s written for her granddaughters. She’s looking forward to trying her hand at stand-up comedy, gaining inspiration from kids, kittens and kooks calling 911.
