This collection of first-prize-winning Spanish-language short stories, Desnudos del alma (Nuevo Ser: Buenos Aires, 2004) by Marisa Estelrich, is masterfully translated to English by Graciela Lucero-Hammer. Marisa Estelrich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she completed her studies at the Instituto Nacional Superior del Profesorado en Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández (B.A. in English as a Second Language. 1985). She moved to Winston-Salem in 1997, and completed her postgraduate studies at Wake Forest University, and at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. Her academic articles, newspaper articles, literary translations and short stories have been published in the United States, Spain and Argentina. She has won a First Prize Short Story Award for her stories “The Tearoom”/“La confitería” and “Days of Insomnia”/“Días de insomnio.” Her first novel Cuando yo te vuelva a ver has won an award at the Cristóbal Zaragoza V Short Novel Contest in Villajoyosa, Spain, and will be published in 2009. At present she works as a free-lance writer, editor, literary translator and moderator of creative writing workshops in Spanish and English. Marisa Estelrich nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina, donde se graduó como Profesora de Inglés en el Instituto Nacional Superior del Profesorado en Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández. Se trasladó a la ciudad de Winston-Salem en el año 1997 y realizó estudios de postgrado en la Universidad de Wake Forest y en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Greensboro. Sus artículos académicos, traducciones literarias y cuentos han sido publicados en los Estados Unidos, Argentina y España. Obtuvo el Primer Premio de Narrativa Breve por sus cuentos “La confitería” y “Días de insomnio.” Su primera novela Cuando yo te vuelva a ver fue galardonada en el V Certamen de Novela Breve Cristóbal Zaragoza en Villajoyosa, España y será publicada en el 2009. En la actualidad trabaja como escritora free-lance, editora y traductora literaria. Organiza talleres de creación literaria en español y en inglés. Graciela Lucero-Hammer, Ph.D. is currently Chair and Associate Professor of Spanish in the Modern languages Department at Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A native of Córdoba, Argentina, Lucero-Hammer received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995. She specializes in the study and translation of Contemporary Latinamerican Women Writers. She is co-author of Nuevas Voces Hispanas, a textbook for intermediate students of Spanish, published by Prentice Hall in l999. In 2008 she published a Spanish-to-English translation of a novel by Argentine writer Reyna Carranza entitled Of Love and Madness/Para ahogar un loco amor. Her scholarly articles and poems have appeared in literary journals in Argentina, the US and Canada. Graciela Lucero-Hammer, Ph.D. es jefa del departamento de Lenguas Modernas y profesora titular de la cátedra de literatura latinoamericana en Salem College, Winston-Salem, Carolina del Norte. Nacida en Córdoba, Argentina, se doctoró por la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill en 1995. Lucero-Hammer se especializa en la investigación y traducción de literatura contemporánea de escritoras latinoamericanas. Es coautora de Nuevas Voces Hispanas, texto para la enseñanza de español intermedio, publicado por Prentice Hall en 1999. En el 2008 The Edwin Mellen Press de Lewiston, New York, publicó su traducción del español al inglés de la novela de la escritora argentina Reyna Carranza titulada; Of Love and Madness/Para ahogar un loco amor. Sus artículos y poemas han sido publicados en revistas literarias en Argentina, Estados Unidos y Canadá. Liliana Italiano nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Solía vivir en La Boca, donde cursó estudios en la Escuela Nacional de Cerámica. Finalizó sus estudios en la Escuela de Bellas Artes Dr. Figueroa Alcorta en la Provincia de Córdoba. Durante cuatro años, Liliana vivió en Charlottsville, Virginia, donde expuso sus dibujos, pinturas y cerámicas en exposiciones individuales y grupales. Algunas de sus obras han sido exhibidas en el XVI Salón de Arte Iberoamericano (Washington DC), Art Upstairs Gallery, Black Rock Gallery y varias exposiciones en los Estados Unidos, Argentina y Latinoamérica. En su obra, Liliana juega con las formas orgánicas y las convierte en un signo de interrogación. Nada está quieto, no hay espacio para afirmaciones definitivas. El observador es observado mientras observa. En el año 2007, Liliana se radicó con su esposo y sus hijos en Anisacate, Córdoba, donde sigue trabajando en nuevos proyectos.
Liliana Italiano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She used to dwell in La Boca, where she studied at the Ceramic National School. She finished her studies at the State School of Fine Arts Dr. Figueroa Alcorta in Córdoba Province. Liliana lived in Charlottesville, Virginia for four years, where she shared her paintings, drawings and ceramics in solo and group exhibitions. Some of her art works have been exhibited at the XVI Iberoamerican Art Salon, Washington DC, Art Upstairs Gallery, Black Rock Gallery, and several art festivals around the United States, Argentina, and across Latin America. In her works, Liliana plays with organic shapes and turns them into a question mark. Nothing is quiet; no absolute affirmatives are allowed. The observer is observed at one and the same time. In 2007, Liliana settled with her husband and children in Anisacate, Cordoba, and is now working on new projects.
